THE FOUNTAIN: Is it Opened?

by Jim Mentore

Through the years, this subject has been heatedly debated among many students of present truth. By-laws have been made either supporting or opposing one position or the other, causing much confusion and retarding the progress of the sealing message.

Using both the former and the latter rain, we will look holistically at this subject. Before we delve into this pivotal truth we will look at some statements from the Rod that instructs us of how to study.

Instruction #1

“The most common cause of doctrinal confusion among Bible students lies in their so very frequently failing to view a subject in full perspective from the writer’s point of view, — a failing which results in their seeing it from some foreign standpoint so narrowing their view that instead of gaining the writer’s idea on the subject, they gain a false idea on it. And if the idea be to their liking, they magnify and zealously promote it as truth, whereas if it be not to their liking, they vigorously oppose it, and then lay it to the responsibility of the writer!’’ (3.TR.103 3rd edition)

Instruction #2

‘’The interpretation of these scriptures is supported entirely by the writings of Sr. E.G. White, that is termed the Spirit of Prophecy.’’ {SR1: 11.1}

Instruction #3

‘’Cunning men under the power of the great deceiver, with good words and fair speeches have sought to overthrow the faith of the saints in the word of God by almost innumerable interpretations of the Scriptures, and multiplicity of sects; making it nearly impossible for one to find his way out through the confusion, and thus keeping him in ignorance of the truth.  God, knowing beforehand of these cunning devices, has prophetically illustrated the truth… (2.SR.287)

Written words can be misconstrued, but symbols can not.  Thus making it possible for both learned, and unlearned, to immediately distinguish the difference between truth and error.’’ (2.SR.288)

Instruction #4

‘’Find your explanations “in the Bowl,” and you will have no trouble in knowing the truth, or of avoiding the ever ready trap of deception.  Thus the difficulty in knowing the difference between truth and error is eliminated.’’ (2.SR.289)

With these four pertinent instructions from the servant of the Lord we will now look at the subject.

Zech 13:1– In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

Many Davidians go straight into the main question i.e. “is the fountain opened or closed?” However, if asked WHO or WHAT the fountain represents, they cannot give a definite answer.

It is impossible to have a correct understanding of this subject by doing so, as it is impossible to know the true meaning of the stone of Daniel 2 without first knowing the meaning of the mountain.

The pen of inspiration tells us “No one by beginning to study a subject from the middle, backward or forward, can learn its continuity and know what it is all about.  If one is to learn the full truth of a subject, he must study it in its entirety.  Dogs and cats, not civilized human beings, start eating the slice of pie from the center out.   As intelligent human beings, as God’s people, we ought to eat the pie correctly.’’ (1.TG.5,6.3)

Let us therefore eat the pie correctly by identifying the meaning of the fountain and its purpose by looking at a few questions that are often asked.

1.WHO or WHAT is the fountain?

  • Jeremiah 2:13– For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
  • Jeremiah 17:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters. –
  • Christ is the fountain (A.A.122)
  • The same beautiful and expressive figures are carried throughout the Bible. Centuries before the advent of Christ, Moses pointed to Him as the rock of Israel’s salvation (Deuteronomy 32:15); the psalmist sang of Him as “my Redeemer,” “the rock of my strength,” “the rock that is higher than I,” “a rock of habitation,” “rock of my heart,” “rock of my refuge.” In David’s song His grace is pictured also as the cool, “still waters,” amid green pastures, beside which the heavenly Shepherd leads His flock. Again, “Thou shalt make them,” he says, “drink of the river of Thy pleasures. For with Thee is the fountain of life.” Psalm 19:14; 62:7; Psalm 61:2; 71:3 (margin); 73:26 (margin); 94:22; 23:2; 36:8, 9. And the wise man declares, “The wellspring of wisdom [is] as a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:4. To Jeremiah, Christ is “the fountain of living waters;” to Zechariah, “a fountain opened … for sin and for uncleanness.” Jeremiah 2:13; Zechariah 13:1. (PP.413)

What does the ROD say?

  • The power that is able to wash away the filthiness of any man, is “opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem” and is represented by the “fountain” of Zechariah’s prophecy. (2.SR.291)
  • Brother Houteff calls the fountain “THE POWER”.

Who or what is that POWER?

  • 1 Corinthians 1:24- But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
  • Jesus is the source of power, the fountain of life. (AA.478)

(2) Next let us establish the purpose of the fountain:

  • Note that this fountain is able to wash away two things; first sin, and second uncleanness. What is the difference between the one and the other?  “Sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3:4.)  And the result of sin is the decay of the body.  “Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them, When any man hath a running issue out of his flesh, because of his issue he is unclean.” (Lev. 15:2.)  The Biblical term for sickness is, “Uncleanness.”  Also, taking into the body in the form of food of that which is forbidden by the Word of God, is transgression of the law, and corruption of the body (uncleanness). (Shepherd’s Rod book, Vol. 2.page.290)
  • It is now clearly seen how sinners are made saints, how God’s great fountain is capable of cleansing all of us, of making us as white as snow if we let HIM. (1.TG.18.20)

Note in the last statement :

  • the purpose of the fountain is to make US saints
  • The fountain is called a HIM, solidifying our conclusion that Jesus is the

fountain.

Since the purpose of the fountain is FIRST to cleanse us of sins and make sinners saints it must have some role to play in the plan of redemption for the 144,000 before they get to the kingdom.

  1. What comes out of the fountain?

Note, that it was sister white who connected the fountain of Zech 13:1 with the river of Ezekiel 47 (read C.H. 209-212) as seen on the chart of the mighty river of Ezekiel 47:1-12

  • In Ezekiel 47:1 we see that water comes out of the fountain.

4.What could these waters symbolize?

As students of prophecy we know that water has two applications. We will see that brother Houteff used BOTH applications in the same prophecy.

Application #1- water= truth

  • Eph 5:26- That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.
  • The “living waters” must represent living knowledge, living Truth — that is, those who drink, so to speak, of It shall never die. (1.TG.19.7)
  • Then said he unto me, These waters issue out towards the east country, and

go down into the desert, and go into the sea.” (Ezek. 47:8.)  It is remarkable to note how perfect these symbols are in each instance.  This direction of the compass denotes that the message of the “loud cry” is to start eastward when it is first revealed.  The church membership being largely east of California and across the Atlantic, naturally the message must start toward the east.  This symbolical prophecy reveals that the message of the “loud cry” is to originate in California.  Thus fulfilling the prophetic words of the “Spirit of Prophecy” in a letter to Elder E. E. Andross: “I feel confident Elder Andross, that the brethren in Southern California will find a blessing in reviewing the teachings of the Scripture concerning the 144,000 and bringing to bear upon these teachings whatever light there may be in the published writings of the Spirit of Prophecy, and as prayerful consideration is given the matter in all its bearings, I believe that God will make the truth sufficiently clear to make possible the avoidance of needless and unprofitable questions not vital to the salvation of precious souls.” (Shepherd’s Rod book, Vol. 2.page.296,297)

Every present truth believer will agree that the message of the loud cry of revelation 18, E.W.277 and truth concerning the 144,000 is the ROD message and it came in 1930. The statement above shows that the message went eastward FROM THE FOUNTAIN (Jesus, the source of truth).  Therefore, to say the fountain is not in operation right now in anyway is to say that the ROD message DID NOT come from the fountain (Jesus, the source of truth). No fountain, no truth!

The main point of this study is to inform GOD’s people how how HE plans to reform and transform his church by accepting present truth… Jesus, through his word, is currently cleaning us of our sins as we study his truths and apply it to our lives. This is how the LORD intends to make sinners saints. This study expresses the basic gospel.

The servant of GOD tells us in 2.SR.290- God is able to heal the soul and the body; but He will not heal the latter before He has healed the former — “sin” FIRST, then “uncleanness”. When Jesus, the living fountain was on earth he forgave sins and then healed the sinner of physical infirmities.

Application #2= people

“As the tiny rivulet immediately swells into a mighty river, it represents something of very rapid growth.  These waters denote the same as the waters in Revelation 17:15, “People, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.”  For the angel said to Ezekiel: “Which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed.” (Ezek. 47:8.)  Therefore, these waters represent a very great multitude “which no man could number” that shall be healed from sin and disease, saved in the time of the “loud cry” through the ministry of the “house of David” (the church).  As Ezekiel could not swim this river, the symbol is in perfect harmony with Revelation 7:9, “A great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues… clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.” (2.SR.295)

Throughout the pages of the ROD the LORD tells us that he will cleanse his church TWICE.

Again: “In cleansing the temple from the world’s buyers and sellers, Jesus announced His mission,” first,”to cleanse the heart from the defilement of sin, — from the earthly desires, the selfish lusts, the evil habits, that corrupt the soul” (The Desire of Ages, p.161); and second, to cleanse the entire church from sin and sinners. (Tract 8 27)

Firstly the truth purifies and cleanses our lives individually, then in the second cleansing the church is collectively cleansed of all those who refuse to let the truth purify and cleanse their hearts. Resulting in 144,000 saints who gathering in the great multitude through the preaching of the gospel in the power of the HOLY SPIRIT.

  • To say the fountain will not be opened in ANY aspect until in the kingdom would be to say that the 144,000 will be cleansed of their sins three times. First individually and secondly collectively as a body as seen in 8.TR.27 and then thirdly in the kingdom. An idea which is found nowhere in the writings of the prophets. It

A matter of a fact the golden bowl shows us that the 144,000 would have already been freed from ALL SINS by the time they get to the kingdom

While we have already seen that the house of God is to be cleansed from error and from Hypocrites, here in Zechariah’s prophecy we see that the saints themselves are cleansed from their sins — their filthy garments are taken away, and clean and beautiful garments are given in their place. (2.TG.42.33)

Furthermore, after the “bad fish” (hypocrites) are cast out, the “good fish” (the saints) are then put “into vessels,” are not left in the “net” (not left in the place where the cleansing occurred).  Consequently when the church is thus cleansed, the saints are removed from their former place and put in a safe place — away from all worldly influences and environments.  Having been cleansed, they are necessarily thus kept clean.  And where is that place?  The Revelator has the answer:

Rev. 14:1, 4, 5 (Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 42   pg  33)

The cleansed ones you see, are the 144,000, and they are taken to Mount Sion. (2.TG.42.34)

The student of truth should not be confused between THE CLEANSING FOUNTAIN and THE HEART OPERATION. They ARE NOT one and the same. The fountain CLEANSES us of sins while the heart operation TAKES AWAY THE DESIRES to sin. It is clear that the heart operation takes place in the kingdom (1.TG.51.12; 2.TG.3.6,8) but there is NO statement in the golden bowl that says that the two procedures are one and the same.

Inspiration does say that the MARKS of sins will be removed:

E.g.– None of the living can actually be cleansed from all their marks of sin while among the Gentile nations, you see.  They must first be separated from the hypocrites and Gentiles, then brought into their own land, there to be sprinkled with clean water, cleansed from all their filthiness and from all their idols, when they get to their own land, not before (2.TG.33.12) see also: 2.TG.42.35

Marks of sins are not sins. Marks of sins can be catagorised as the same as uncleanness (diseases etc). those will be removed in the kingdom.

This is how the LORD plans to wrap up the work in righteousness. The enemy of truth is working very hard in order to make present truth believes loose sight of Jesus in the ROD message and adopt “another gospel”, but the mighty river of Ezekiel 74 reveals the plan of salvation in the next part of this article we will look at questions that may arise in your mind. The office will gladly accept any questions that you may have and we will try to answer them with the aid of the HOLY SPIRIT.

CAN YOU FIND IT?

2.SR.297,298 says: “And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim; they [the two cities] shall be a place to spread forth nets.” (Ezek. 47:10.)  These two cities reveal that the fish are caught in two places, En-gedi (S.D.A. church)  where the 144,000 are gathered — the first fruits.  En-eglaim (Babylon or the world) where the great multitude of Revelation 7:9 are gathered.  The diagram on the chart, page 294, represents the S.D.A. church (En-gedi) as it becomes the “House of David,” and the place of the river (En-eglaim) denotes the world.

Wow!!! The SDA church (a place for the spreading forth of nets- gather the 144,000) is found on the Ezekiel 47 chart. Can you identify it? We anticipate your answers.
